MEET ARNIE PITTAO

I was born in the southern interior town in BC of Kimberley. After public school I went on to take further training at Concordia College, Edmonton; University of Alberta; AthabascaUniversity; University of Saskatchewan, and several Bible schools. I also spent a year in the USA on a scholarship, studying at a college near Chicago. I hold degrees in Arts, Education, Bible, and Commerce, and diplomas in Electronics and Horticulture. I am a certified Master Gardener. I and my wife Lydia live in Lloydminster, AB where we have resided for the past 32 years, raising our family of three there.

By day I am an educator, currently holding the position of Electronics Specialist with the Lloydminster Public School Division. My involvement with horticulture goes back to my childhood days as I carefully observed my father germinating his own seed, planting and transplanting the garden, and growing a great

variety of both vegetables and flowers. My interest continued to develop and I took several University courses in the field, followed by the completion of a Master Gardener certification as well as a number of specialty courses from various sources.

Each summer Lydia and I travel with the motor home, primarily in the western provinces, to

horticultural events and sites. Together we share in the pursuit of horticultural interests. I have a

very large library of both 35 mm and digital images covering a great diversity of horticultural

material. I hosted my own television show for several years called “Down To Earth,” have

written numerous newspapers, speak at various horticultural events, and devote considerable time

and expertise to computer aspects for the groups to which I belong. With the help of Lydia I have

compiled extensive indices for several serial publications, including The Rosebank Letter, Roses

Canada, The Gardener For the Prairies, The Rose Rambler and The Canadian Rose Society

Annual.

Editor’s note: Arnold is the second Board member from outside of Ontario.

OBITUARY

Dick Lindner, honorary life president of ROSA, was well known to the members of our Societies. After his retirement, he kept himself busy working as an accountant and tending to the hundreds of roses in his large garden in Durbanville until his sudden death on 22 May 2004. We shall miss him, especially his wise council at meetings and his superb specimen roses at shows and exhibitions.
