efforts of the spring but there are still a few tasks to keep up with; ·
weeds to be kept under control by hoeing, deadheading of the roses and
other flowers to keep them producing throughout the summer.
Deadheading of roses should cease by September 1st to allow the slow down
of growth. If this is not done the wood of new growth will not have
time to harden before the onset of winter and will die. Along with
these tasks make sure all debris around roses such as fallen leaves and
petals is cleaned up and disposed of in the garbage. Spraying to
control blackspot and mildew should be
continued until the end of October. If you use alternate methods of
control these also should be kept up. Vol. I, No. 5.

Now is the time to look at how your roses are performing.
Identify the weak performers and start looking for names to replace them
with. Go to other people's gardens in your area and see what is
working for them.
Now is also the time to plan for a new rose garden if that is in your
landscape plans, find the right site with lots of sunshine and good
drainage and mark it out. If this is completed by the end of fall,
it will be easy to plant in April. July should be the last time you
feed your roses this year.
If you have other ideas which will help new rose growers, forward
them to the editor.
It is with the deepest regret that we announce the passing of our Honourary President,
Audrey Meiklejohn, on August 1, 2004. Audrey was the consummate rosarian, flower arranger, teacher, lover of yellow roses
and friend to all. A longer appreciation of her lif will appear in The Annual, but we shall all miss her terribly.
