Saskatchewan Rose Society Hardy Rose Project
The Saskatchewan Rose Society (SRS) would very much appreciate the
assistance of all rose growers, but especially those on the Prairies, with
a project they are undertaking. As you are aware, the prairie provinces
have been home to some significant rose breeders in the past century.
Men like George Bugnet, Robert Simonet, Robert Erskine, Frank Skinner and
Percy Wright and others were instrumental in developing roses that were/are
hardy in the prairie climate.
However, the majority of these cultivars have disappeared from commerce
and many may now be extinct. The SRS would like to identify locations
where these hardy, “historic” roses are being grown, especially across the
prairies. Although we are aware of the holdings of public gardens
such as Brooks, Devonian Botanic Garden, Patterson Gardens,
etc., we are certain that many of these historic roses exist in private
collections and at other sites. We do not need information on tender
roses or on the Parkland or Explorer series,
since the latter are still in commerce. But we would like to solicit
your help in locating these other historic Canadian roses
Below is a sample of a form to send us any and all information on all
Canadian, hardy, historic shrub roses that you know the location of or that
you grow yourself. Under Condition please comment on the
physical status of the plant - vigor, health, diseases and any other
helpful cultural information. Under Comments please feel free
to add any notes we might find useful, including where the plant comes
from, its approximate age, its flowering habit, etc.

rose growers who are concerned about preserving the historic Canadian
cultivars.
