Time to Take a Stand – Continued from Pg 2

Change always brings with it some disruption, but even so, many improvements have been and are being made. Let me cite some of them:

·        The CRS membership has steadily increased over the past year.

·        Two directors from outside of Ontario have joined the board (By the way, Harry, one’s place of residence does not dictate one’s vote on policies or procedural matters.), and we are recruiting others. Each has an equal voice on the board.

·        The CRS regional directorships, across the country, are showing progress thus far. This effort is continuing.

·        We are concentrating on increasing the CRS’s effectiveness as a national organization, whose purpose is to share information and to assist rosarians and local rose societies with all the resources of the society.

·        We are working on an effective national education program.

·        The CRS publications have increased in number and send-outs over the past year, and feedback has been positive.

·        The CRS Jubilee Convention next year promises to be a great success. Plans are proceeding well.

·        And we are concentrating on an effective infrastructure across the country that will enhance the Canadian rose scene and allow rosarians to work together in a synergistic mode, using the many resources of the CRS and the expertise of its officers and members, all of which is available to rosarians throughout Canada.

future and allow his group and the CRS to both exist in peace.  I wish him and the N-R-C well. I also wish the sentiment were mutual.

OBITUARY

Dr. James Hamilton (“Pete”) Baillie

M.D.  F.R.C.P. (C.)

1912-2004

Born in Montreal in 1912, “Pete” graduated from the University of Toronto in 1939.  He joined the RCAF in 1941, and after World War II was Medical Director of Bell Canada until his retirement in 1970.

Married to Mary (nee Graham) for 65 years, they were both very active in the CRS and its forerunner, the Rose Society of Ontario.  In the 1950s he was on the Board of Directors and was Vice-President for three years.  Marie was President of the CRS in 1960-61.  In honour of their dedication and splendid work, both she and Pete were named Patrons in 1970 and continue as such to this day.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mary and her children and grandchildren.
