October 2004        The CRS CommPoster     7

Letter to the President - ….Continued from Pg 6

I submit for consideration by CRS Executive the following suggestions:

a)      That CRS become transformed into a Federation of Canadian Rose Societies.   This would comprise each of Vancouver Rose Society, Saskatchewan Rose Society, etc.  Membership dues for each local Society would need to be increased to support the Federation.  The present CRS members residing in the TorontoKitchener region would need to be reconstituted as a local society.

a)      CRS as a Federation could have enhanced opportunity for:

a)      Attracting nurseries and rose sellers as corporate members

a)      Serving as a national accreditation body and clearing house

Yours sincerely

GEORGE BLYTHE

August 20, 2004

In recognition of a friend, colleague and fellow rosarian.

I have been fortunate to be able to say George was my friend, I feel a deep sense of loss personally and on behalf of all rose growers everywhere; and the Canadian Rose Society.

When I moved from Montreal to Kitchener 25 years ago my telephone rang one day and a cheery voice on the other end said “Hello I’m George Blythe the Regional Director for the CRS and I would like to come and meet with you”.  That was the start of a friendship which as lasted till his passing on the 18th August, 2004.

We put our heads together and decided that there should be a rose society within the Kitchener Waterloo region and within a few short weeks The Golden Triangle Rose Society was formed.  Part of our early discussions we believed that this Society would not only develop rose growing in this region but be a vital part of the community.  To this end we decided that a rose garden at the then known Freeport Hospital was a worthy project and we worked with the Hospital Administration to make it happen.  The rose show helped to support the growth and up keep of the garden but it was the work of the many volunteers led by George who tended the roses which has made this project a huge success. George was the one who always sold more admittance tickets than any other member to the show to ensure the garden would succeed.

George worked hard for the CRS because he believed in a national organization. When he was in charge of the demonstration gardens he and Elaine travelled across the country visiting gardens and people making that personal contact which is so important.
