William Baffin was introduced in 1983. It is a hardy climbing rose that flowers freely and repeatedly and has strong arching canes that reach 2.5 - 3.0 m at Ottawa. This climber is highly resistant to blackspot and powdery mildew.
Flowers are medium red, slightly fragrant, 6 - 7 cm across and have an average of 20 petals. Clusters of up to 30 flowers can be found on this plant. Propagation is from softwood stem cuttings.
This climber has been tested at Ottawa since 1975 and at other locations across Canada since 1982. In Ottawa, its branches require no pruning and can be left on the trellis through the winter. It survives in locations with more severe winters in northern Ontario and western Canada and is hardy in zone 2a according to the results of the REPLOQ.
William Baffin was obtained from open pollination of a hardy seedling derived from R. kordesii and a pollen parent originating from Red Dawn and Suzanne.

Le William Baffin a été homologué en 1983. Ce rosier rustique fleurit abondamment au début de l'été. Il poursuit sa période de floraison jusqu'en septembre. Il produit de robustes ramifications arquées atteignant de 2,5 à 3,0 m à Ottawa. Il peut être palissé sur un mur ou un support. Il est très résistant à la tache noire et au blanc.
La fleur, portée en grappes d'un maximum de 30 unités, est légèrement parfumée et d'un rouge moyen. Elle mesure entre 6 et 7 cm de diamètre et est composée d'une vingtaine de pétales. Le plant se multiplie facilement à partir de boutures de rameaux tendres.
Le William Baffin a été testé à Ottawa depuis 1975 et à d'autres endroits au Canada depuis 1982. À Ottawa, il n'est pas nécessaire de tailler les branches et on peut les laisser sur le treillis tout l'hiver. Ce rosier a survécu dans des endroits au climat plus rigoureux comme dans le nord de l'Ontario et dans l'Ouest canadien et sa cote de survie est de 2a selon les résultats d'essais du REPLOQ.
Le William Baffin a été obtenu par pollinisation libre d'un plant rustique pui provenait du R. kordesii, comme parent femelle, et d'un croisement entre le Red Dawn et le Suzanne, comme parent mâle.
