John Cabot

John Cabot was the first climbing rose of the Explorer series released in 1978. The plant has strong arching canes of 2.5 - 3.0 m and blooms freely in June and July and sporadically in August and September. It has good field resistance to blackspot and powdery mildew.

The fragrant flowers are medium red, 7 cm across, with an average of 40 petals. The plant propagates easily from softwood stem cuttings.

This selection has been tested at Ottawa since 1970 and at other locations across Canada since 1976. In Ottawa it requires pruning of deadwood in certain years. When grown in locations with more severe winters, it will need more spring pruning and can be grown as a shrub rose. The plant is generally hardy in zone 3. It was chosen as PLANT D'OR in 1996.

John Cabot originated from a cross of R. kordesii, and a hardy seedling originating from Masquerade and R. laxa.

En 1978, le John Cabot a été le premier rosier grimpant à être enregistré dans la série Explorateur. Ce plant produit de robustes ramifications arquées atteignant de 2,5 à 3,0 de longueur. Il fleurit abondamment en juin et en juillet et, sporadiquement en août et en septembre. Il résiste bien à la tache noire et au blanc.

La fleur parfumée, d'un rouge moyen, fait 7 cm de diamètre et compte environ 40 pétales. Le plant se multiplie facilement par boutures de rameaux tendres.

Le John Cabot est testé à Ottawa depuis 1970 et à d'autres endroits au Canada depuis 1976. À Ottawa, il faut tailler le bois mort certaines années. Dans les endroits aux hivers plus rigoureux, une taille printanière plus prononcée sera nécessaire. On pourra le cultiver comme rosier arbustif dans ces endroits-là. Habituellement rustique dans la zone 3. Ce cultivar a été nommé PLANTD'OR 1996.

Le John Cabot est issu d'un croisement entre le R. kordesii, comme parent femelle, et un plant rustique provenant du Masquerade et du R. laxa, comme parent mâle.
