John Davis, introduced in 1986, has a trailing growth habit and branches that grow from 2.0 to 2.5 m at Ottawa. The plant flowers freely, is very winter-hardy, and shows high resistance to backspot and powdery mildew.

The medium pink flowers have a light spicy perfume, a diameter of 8 - 9 cm and an average of 40 petals. The blooms are often of quartered form similar to many old-fashioned roses, and have many as 17 flowers occur in a cluster. The plant roots easily from softwood stem cuttings.

This selection has been tested at Ottawa since 1978 and also at a number of locations across Canada. Little or no spring pruning is required in Ottawa, and the plant is hardy in zone 3.

John Davis originated from the open pollination of a seedling from a cross between R. kordesii and a line originating from a cross between Red Dawn and Suzanne.

Le John Davis, homologué en 1986, a un port rampant et des ramifications qui atteignent entre 2,0 et 2,5 m à Ottawa. Il fleurit abondamment, est très rustique et résiste très bien au blanc et à la tache noire.

La fleur d'un rose moyen, au parfum épicé fait un diamètre de 8 à 9 cm et compte une quarantaine de pétales en moyenne. La division des pétales en quartefeuille leur donne l'apparence des roses d'antan. On a observé jusqu'à 17 fleurs par grappe. Le plant se multiplie facilement à partir de boutures de rameaux tendres.

Le John Davis est mis à l'essai à Ottawa et à d'autres endroits au Canada depuis 1978. À Ottawa, il ne nécessite qu'une très légère taille du bois mort et peut même s'en passer. Rustique dans la zone 3.

Le cultivar John Davis est issu de la pollinisation libre d'un jeune plant obtenu par croisement entre le R. kordesii et une lignée provenant d'un croisement préalable entre le Red Dawn et le Suzanne.
