Where to Buy Roses in Canada

  • Brentwood Bay Nursery, Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Robin Dening told us, "We decided to do something different, specialise in the more disease resistant varieties of roses and grow them on their own roots. Obviously it is impossible to suddenly have every variety available on it's own roots, but we are striving to do the best we can. We have found a few other growers growing roses on their own roots and when we have to we purchase from them. We still import from the UK and buy a few grafted roses locally grown. We only ship own root roses out of BC."

John Dyck of Bakker says: "Our roses are budded on multiflora rootstock or they are grown on their own roots. On our site in the photo section of our rose pages they're symbols indicating which are grown in which manner. Our roses are grown on our own selection of multiflora seedlings, (unlike many grown on imported rootstock,) that have been proven to be hardy throughout much of Canada and unlike cutting-type rootstocks (onto which most imports are grafted), seedlings don't propagate unwanted viruses which reduce hardiness and performance. We are constantly evaluating rose varieties to offer a list of unique, disease resistant, and hardy selections. A rose must first perform well in our fields before it is sold."
